Cricut Sewing Blog Tour + Giveaway

I am so excited to share with you some fun ways to incorporate your Cricut cutting machine into your sewing projects! When Cricut invited me to be on this tour, I was super excited and exploding with ideas. I have been on a lace kick lately and i knew I wanted to use the iron on vinyl to create a lace effect. So today I am going to share with you how I made these gorgeous dresses along with some handy dandy tips. You can check out the Cricut Explore Air 2 machines – trust me – you will be addicted! #vinyleverything You can check out this blog post to see so many projects that were made using the Cricut.  AND GUESS WHAT!!!! Cricut is giving away an Explore Air 2 to one lucky reader! (hang tight – we will get to the details in a bit). If you are anxious to shop Cricut – use coupon code ChristmasInJuly for free shipping on US orders!

Lets start with this  mint dress. I use the super soft Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements in Sweet Mint. AGF is known for their high quality fabrics and their solids are the perfect base for a dress like this. I have been itching to make my daughter a Sophie dress so I knew that was where I would start with this creation. (PS – All patterns are on sale right now for 25% off!!!).  Cricut has this gorgeous iron on foil in ROSE GOLD – yaaassssss!!! It doesn’t get any better than this! It was kinda tricky to photograph but trust me, this vinyl in real life is all sorts of gorgeous. I purchased this file on etsy from Easy Cut Print PD. This file is the Lace Doily set and was only $2 and came in MANY file formats. I was really excited to see the AI file in there so I can manipulate the pattern to fit the bodice of my dress. I opened the design in Adobe Illustrator and sliced it in half and did a little tidying up on it (which turned out to be a waste of time since the bottom of the pattern is in the seam allowance – duh! haha I then sent it over to the Cricut Design Space and resized it to fit on the bodice. You can skip the whole Illustrator part and slice it in Design Space but I LOVE playing in AI so I just went there to do it.

I placed my rose gold foil onto my cut mat with the foil side down. You will be cutting it from the back so the #1 thing you have to do when cutting iron on vinyl is mirror the image (not important if your design is like mine – but words – VERY important). I set my dial to iron on and away the machine went. I swear I can just watch it cut for hours. So mesmerizing. Then I had to weed that whole design. There was A LOT so I found a really fun trick using tape. Please note that this video was made for regular iron on transfer (the designs on the orange dress), the foil is a lot more delicate so if you want to weed your foil vinyl using tape, you will want to use something like scotch tape, something that is not super sticky. Trust me – i ruined a whole medallion in 1 second by using the shipping tape – yes, I about cried.

Here is my youtube video….

For the super adorable orange dress I used the Bella pattern. This too was an Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements solid in Apricot Crepe. I used the Cricut white vinyl and cut these intricate lace details out. I think I used 8 strips to go all the way around the skirt and I made the design smaller for the bodice and doubled it up so the design was on each side. I LOVE how this turned out. Simple elegance if you ask me. I got this design from the Cricut library and it was free because I have Cricut Access! There are SO many designs that are available free to those who have access that a few projects pays for itself! I used the Vintage Lace Border file and it worked beautifully. I cut them at about 11.5″ long and cut them all out at once. Then I used my fancy “weeding with tape” method (video above) making this project a lot faster than you would think.

My girlies are super happy with their new dresses. I hope I was able to inspire some creative fun with your cutting machine. These dresses are stunning! I really want to cut some lace-like or embroidery-like now! It’s great because these dresses are easy care, but look very delicate!
