Hampton Sew Along – Day 2
Welcome back for day two of the Hampton sew along. I must say you all knocked it out of the park with your fabric selections yesterday! I’m so excited to see your finished Hamptons. For today we are working through steps 1 through 10.
Front Bodice
Begin by laying your front main bodice right side up. Then, lay your front lining bodice on top so that right sides are touching. Sew or serge along the neckline.
Cut Out Back Bodice
If you are sewing the cut out back bodice you need to sew your strap piece before attaching to the back bodice. Fold your strap piece in half long ways and sew along the raw edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn right side out and press so the seam is in the back.
Place your strap along the short vertical edge of the main back bodice and baste in place.
Lay your back lining on top of your main back so that right sides are touching. Sew down the back piece that has the strap and 3/4 of the rounded cut out. Do not sew any further.
Now we need to flip the back bodice so we can attach the strap to the other side. Take the right side of the back bodice and flip it under the left side, making sure to match up the bodice shapes. Flip the top lining piece down. Pull the strap out from between the bottom two layers and fold it over the top layers. Pin the strap to the main fabric along the short vertical edge and baste in place.
Flip the lining back up and pin the lining fabric to the main fabric. Sew down the slanted back shoulder area and around the back curve to where your other stitches ended.
With your front and back bodice pieces laying flat, separate the main and lining fabric by flipping them in towards the center cut out.
Please note, I’ve uploaded a video in the sew along album to walk you through adding the back strap.
Simple Back Bodice
If you are creating the simple back bodice you just have a few steps to complete. Lay your back main bodice so that right sides are facing up. Lay your back lining bodice piece on top so that right sides are touching. Sew along the neckline. Clip your curves with pinking shears if you did not use a serger. Continue below with the shoulder seams.
Shoulder Seams
Finally, lay the front on top of the back, matching up the shoulder seams. Your main and lining pieces should match up so that right sides are touching. Sew the shoulder seam.
Day 2 Progress
That’s all for day two of the Hampton sew along. Make sure you upload your daily progress photo in the sew along album in the Facebook fan group for a chance at 5 daily prizes! I’ll see you back here tomorrow when we will add sleeves or finish a sleeveless bodice.
Happy sewing,
Chauncey
