Patricia Sew-A-Long Day 2

Day 2 of the SLPco Patricia Sew-A-Long is here!  How did you do with day one? Are you on track? Yesterday we chose our fabric and design options.  Then we print and cut our pattern pieces. If you are getting a late start, it isn’t too late to join in.  Check out the details from Day 1.

Today we are cutting our fabric.  To be honest, this is my least favorite part of sewing.  It seems so tedious and I’m always paranoid I’m going to miss cut and mess things up.  What is your least favorite part of sewing?

Let’s talk about cutting.  There are all sorts of tools out there for cutting, but my preference is definitely a rotary cutter and mat.  I don’t really use scissors for anything except cutting elastic and thread.  I don’t have a fancy cutting table, so I just lay my cutting mat out on the floor and cut.  I actually don’t know how I would maneuver on a table.  I like spreading the length of my fabric across the floor.  I will say I’m beginning to feel like I’m aging when I stand up after cutting and my back is all in a pinch.  I’m too young for that!! Scissors are also a cutting option.  If you are a scissor cutter, you may pin down your pieces to help keep them in place or utilize pattern weights.  I often use my phone as a pattern weight because it is usually laying around nearby.  Are you team rotary cutter or team scissors?

When you are finished cutting you should have 2 front bodices (one main, one lining), 2 back bodices (one main, one lining), 2 skirt pieces (front and back), 3 skirt ruffle pieces, 2 sleeves if you have chosen that design option and 2 sleeve ruffles if you have chosen that sleeve option.  If you have trim pieces you can cut those now as well.

After you are all done cutting, snap a photo of your progress and hop over to the SLPco facebook group and share your work.  I can’t wait to see everyone’s progress!
