Scarlett Sewalong Day 3
We’re back for day 3 of the Scarlett sewalong! If you missed day 1 or 2, be sure to check them out here! Today we are going to attach our bum ruffles and finish the edges. Let’s get started!
If you cut your bodice with a different piece of material than your sun suit bottom, follow the steps on pages 17-18 in the Scarlet pattern to attach the bodice and bottoms. Don’t sew the side seams yet though!
You have some important decisions to make! First, decide if you will be using shirring or elastic casings in the bodice and leg openings. Next, decide if you will be finishing the edges with rolled hems or shirring. Follow the instructions below for your desired methods!
Shirring with Rolled Hems
Follow the pattern instructions for gathering the bum ruffles and attaching them to the back romper piece. Go ahead and sew both of the side seams together and finish your seams. You can now do rolled hems along the top of the bodice and the leg openings. You are done with day 3!
Shirring with Trim
Follow the pattern instructions for gathering the bum ruffles and attaching them to the back romper piece. Sew ONE side seam together and finish that seam. Finish the top edge of the bodice using a zig zag stitch or serger. Fold down the edge by 1/4″ and top stitch. You can now add a trim to the finished edge. Sew together the other side seam and finish that seam. Finish the raw edges of the leg openings by zig zag stitching or serging. Fold down by 1/4″ and top stitch. Add your desired trim to the finished leg seams. You are done with day 3!
Elastic Casings with Rolled Hems
Follow the pattern instructions for gathering the bum ruffles and attaching them to the back romper piece. Sew ONE side seam and finish the seam. Finish the top edge of the sun suit using rolled hems. You will wait until day 4 to sew the second side seam together and to finish the leg openings. You are done with day 3!
Elastic Casings with Trim
Follow the pattern instructions for gathering the bum ruffles and attaching them to the back romper piece. Sew ONE side seam toegther and finish that seam. Finish the top edge of the bodice using a zig zag stitch or serger. Fold down the edge by 1/4″ and top stitch. Add a trim to the finished edge. You will wait until day 4 to sew the second side seam together and to finish the leg openings. You are done with day 3!
I chose to do the shirring with rolled hems and the elastic casings with trim. Here are my two:
(I forgot to take a picture in progress on this one. Whoops!)
Isn’t it fun seeing your Scarlett’s Sun Suit coming together?! Make sure you’re sharing your progress photos in our SLPco Fan Group!
