Trixie Sew-Along Day 4 Cover

Trixie Sew Along – Day 4

Welcome to day 4 of the Trixie sew-along. I’m glad everyone got their henley plackets done and it looks like everyone is caught back up! Today we are going to work on adding sleeves/sleeve binding. We will work through steps 15 through 24 of the pattern tutorial.

Sleeve Binding

If you decided to make the sleeveless version then you will need to add binding to finish the sleeve. Start by sewing your side seams together. Note: if you added pockets you will need to use your sewing machine for this step because a serger cannot make the tight curves around the pockets.

To add the binding fold the arm bindings in half so that right sides are together. Sew the short raw edges together. Press the seams open. Repeat for your other arm binding piece. Next, fold the binding in half so that wrong sides are together and press.

Before attaching the binding to the sleeve, section the arm binding into four equal sections and mark with pins. Now, section the arm hole into four equal sections and mark with pins. With your dress flipped inside out, align the raw edges of the binding to the arm hole, matching up the section mark pins. Pin the binding in place to the sleeve hole. Sew the binding to the arm hole. Make certain to use a stretch stitch or you may use your serger. Trim the seam allowance.

Finally, turn your dress right side out and flip the binding completely to the right side of the dress. Pin the binding in place making sure to sandwich the seam allowance between the dress and binding. Topstitch the binding to the dress 1/8″ away from the edge. Press well. Repeat steps 15 through 20 for the other arm hole and binding piece.

Sleeves

To attach your sleeves to your dress, start by laying your bodice right side up in front of you and open at the shoulder seams.

Take your sleeve and find the center of the top curve and mark with a pin. Match up your pin mark with the shoulder seam. Pin the sleeve to the bodice at the shoulder seam so that right sides are touching.

Continue pinning the sleeve to the arm curve. Sew/serge the sleeve to the bodice. Repeat for the other sleeve.

Now that you have your sleeve added to the bodice it is time to enclose the side seam/sleeves. With the dress laying flat, take the front piece and lay them over the back piece so that right sides are touching. Match up the sleeve seams, armpit seams, side seams, and pockets. Pin in place. Sew/serge the entire arm and side seam.

Note: if you added pockets you will need to use your sewing machine for this step since a serger cannot make the tight curves around the pockets. Repeat for the other side of your dress.

Finally, fold the sleeve hem up 1/2″ and press. Topstitch the hem 3/8″ away from the folded edge. Repeat with your other sleeve.
