Willow Sew Along Day 5

Today we will attach our clear elastic and skirts!

I like to sew the clear elastic to the inside of my bodice just in case it creeps up higher than 3/8” and shows outside of my seam. The clear elastic simply stabilizes your knit and is not meant to be pulled or gather your fabric.

For the Willow pattern I like to start at one “V” and sew my elastic to the other “V” then stop, cut, and start again. This allows me to maintain a nice sharp point. I sew with a longer stitch length and place my stitching further toward the bottom of my bodice than my seam allowance to be sure my stitches do not show on the outside of the finished garment.

When your clear elastic is attached, your bodice should not be misshapen. If you find it has caused your fabric to bunch up or it has pulled the knit you should remove it and try again.

Now it is time to attach the skirt!! Be sure to find the center of your skirt and line it up with your center bodice and also match up your side seams before gathering. Pin or clip your skirt to bodice and sew to attach.

I usually press my skirt to bodice seam up toward the bodice but for the willow this can be tricky. It is still important to press the seam but the center points will lay better if you press them down for this design. Be careful to press the side seams so they lay neatly as well.

DO NOT IRON ON YOUR ELASTIC!!!! Be sure to iron from the outside of the garment or use a press cloth because the clear elastic will melt!

Pop out your gathering stitches and stand in awe of your gorgeous new dress! Post your pictures for us to see and enter to win the sew along giveaway! You have until Sunday to add your finished photos to the Willow Sew Along Album and be entered to win! I chose to pair my Willow with these adorable Sarah Ann Leggings with button tab using Hawthorne Threads Knit from the Essentials Collection.

Thanks so much for joining me!
