Free pillowcase dress pattern for Real Hope for Haiti

Hey everyone. I am excited to share with you a fun little project I have been working on with two local high school students. Sierra and Ally are both are seniors at the high school in my town. These two young women joined a program called FCCLA and are working on a STAR project. Please take a few minutes and watch their video we put together about them and their project.

What is FCCLA & a STAR project?

from the FCCLA website: “Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. Everyone is part of a family, and FCCLA is the only national Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education”. Through this program, students can compete in a nationwide STAR event. “STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through activities”.

Sierra has been interested in fashion design so she wanted to incorporate sewing into their project. After a lot of research, her and Ally really wanted to help the Real Hope for Haiti organization by making and donating dresses. Mrs. Fingarson, their FACS teacher, came to me and asked if I could help the girls with their project. I was more than excited to help! I just love to see younger people wanting to learn to sew and using their skills to help others. The sewing community has always been so great at giving back and this project just spoke to me. This is not only an amazing opportunity to help a country that is devastated by poverty, they will compete with other students. The ultimate goal is to win nationals with this project. This would benefit them so much. This success of this project could get them scholarships and be used on their collage applications.

I wanted to help out in every way possible. We created this FREE Haiti’s pillowcase dress pattern to help encourage people to sew for the Real Hope for Haiti organization. And, on top of it, I am offering a store credit for every dress that is donated! We would love if you could take some time and sew up a dress (or 2 or 3…) and send them to the high school. From there, they will mail them to the organization in Haiti on April 1st, 2018. A few things the girls found out during their research- the girls like when the fabric is not prewashed, because it feels brand new to them, they usually get used clothing so the feel of new fabric is something they really like. This is not a requirement, but I did find it interesting and wanted to share with you.

A little more details on how to donate. Download the free Haiti’s Pillowcase Dress and on page 12 of the pattern, you will see a questionnaire. Please fill that out and send it to the address below. There are a few optional questions as well that Sierra & Ally would like to know so they can include that data in their project. For every dress you donate, I will give you a $5 store credit towards patterns. There is no limit to how many you can donate, you will get $5 credit per dress. Offer is valid on dresses received on or before April 1st, 2018.
