Crazy Chicken Table Runner – Bountiful Blog Tour 2

Hello! I have been working hard behind the scenes here! I have been wanting to quilt more lately and I finally made some time to do this. Quilting is super relaxing for me and I get so much joy out of seeing all my hard work when a project is finished. Typically, I sew everything by machine but when Sharon Holland asked me to be apart of her second Bountiful fabrics blog tour, I knew I wanted to make something very special for my home. This fabric collection really speaks to me and it fits in pretty well with my decor. This tour didn’t feature garments so I was excited to come up with a very fun table runner (or wall hanging – whatever you choose). You can see my creations from the 1st Bountiful blog tour HERE.

I searched the internet for table runner patterns and I just didn’t find what I wanted. After a visit to my Aunt Susie’s house, she showed me a gorgeous chicken quilt she was starting. I instantly wanted it – haha. So when I got home, I drafted a few crazy looking chickens. They weren’t supposed to be goofy looking but they were and I loved it even more. I intended on appliquéing the pieces on by machine but I had an upcoming plane trip to Houston’s International Quilt Market and I decided this would be so fun to hand stitch on the plane. So I grabbed my project bag and threw all my Aurifil floss I had on hand into it. Hand stitching these in place took some time ( a few hours total) but it really made these chickens even more spectacular.

Sharon has so many gorgeous collections for Art Gallery Fabrics now and I love them all. Her collections are easy to mix up and grab a few prints from each. In this table runner, I did stick mostly to Bountiful but when my fabric fell off the shelf, the gorgeous yellow print from Tapestry landed next to my table runner and I loved how it framed it. So I decided that was a sign and I had to use it for the binding. I also used the same Tapestry print but in the brown colorway for the backing.

I had a hard time deciding on what type of quilting I wanted to do on this. I didn’t want to detract from the crazy chickens but I wanted it to have some texture. It’s been awhile since I free motion quilted on my Baby Lock Crescendo. This machine is designed for quilting and I LOVE this machine. The large throat space is perfect for home quilting. (not an ad – haha) – If you follow me in my facebook fan group – you will know I am a hardcore Baby Lock fan.

It was hard to snag a picture showcasing the quilting – I just ended up doing a simple meandering pattern. It gave it the texture I wanted but didn’t steal any attention away from the chickens. I used Aurifil 50 weight thread in white (2021) for both the top and bobbin threads.

I have created a FREE pattern download of this pattern so you can make one in your favorite prints. The best part – I created multiple types of files so if you have a cutting machine such as a Cricut or Silhouette, you can cut these on it! I used my Cricut Maker machine but since you are using bonded fabric, you can use your Explore air or equivalent. I find it so much more enjoyable to have the machine precisely cut out each piece for me. It does the dirty work and I can get to my project faster and enjoy the process.
