Autumn Sew Along Day 4

Autumn Sew Along – Day 4

Hey friends! Welcome back for day four of the Autumn sew-along. We are closing in on the end of the sew-along and only have a few more steps to complete our creations. Today we are working through steps 18 through 25 of the pattern tutorial. This includes adding sleeves or using the burrito roll method to enclose a lined, sleeveless version.

Autumn SAL

Burrito Roll Method

If you chose to add the lining to your Autumn creation and are creating a sleeveless version, you will complete the following steps. Begin by laying your bodice so that the main side is facing up. Separate the shoulder seams of your main and lining on one side, flipping the lining toward the center of the bodice. Take the opposite side bodice and lining pieces and begin rolling them toward the separated shoulder seam. Continue rolling until your fabric roll is in between the separated main and lining fabric.

Now, take the open lining piece on the bottom and fold it over the rolled fabric onto the main fabric so that right sides are touching. Align the armhole curve and sides and pin in place. Sew along the armhole curve. Clip the curves making sure not to clip through any stitches.

Next, separate the main and lining fabrics and begin to gently pull the rolled fabric through the closed shoulder seam. This will turn your dress right side out. Repeat these steps with the opposite armhole.

The last thing you need to do is sew your side seams closed. Lay your bodice so that the main fabric is right side up. Separate your lining by flipping it up toward the neckline for your front and back pieces. Bring the back piece over onto the front so that right sides are together. Match up the arm curve seams where the main and lining fabric meet. Pin down the side seams. Sew/serge down both sides. Flip your dress right side out and press well.

Adding Sleeves

Before adding sleeves, the first thing I like to do is serge the bottom edge of my sleeve to finish the edge. This makes for a nice clean finish when you hem your sleeves tomorrow.

Next, place your sleeve on top of your bodice piece so that right sides are touching. Match up the sleeve with the arm curve and pin in place. If you added the lining, you will pin the sleeve to the main and lining layers. Sew/serge your sleeve to your bodice. Repeat with the other side.

Finally, with your dress laying so that right sides are facing up, flip the front of the dress down onto the back so that right sides are touching. Match up the sleeve seams of your front and back pieces and pin in place. Continue matching up the sleeve and sides of your dress and pin together. Sew/serge the entire arm and side seam in place. Repeat with the other side.
