How to achieve different looks using the same pattern
If you are anything like me, you probably have a favourite fabric base that you use most of all. For me, it is cotton spandex. I love how versatile it is and so easily accessible in fabric shop. Again, like me, you also most likely have a few favourite patterns that you use very frequently. After a while though, it can seem a little bit boring to sew the same things over again!
Well! I’ll let you in on a little secret! Sometimes, it is worth it to venture into a different fabric base to create a new style for your favourite pattern. Just remember to follow the minimum stretch recommended by the designer!
For this blog post, I’ve chosen to work with the beautiful Aria dress pattern! The back bows are such a lovely touch. The pattern comes with different sleeve length, modest back panel option, shoulder ruffles and gathered or circle skirt. Aria has recently been updated and has an amazing projector file!
Cotton spandex
This is my most used type of fabric. It works for the vast majority of sewing patterns designed for knits. It has some structure but also has a bit of flow. You can always have a little bit more flow by choosing light weight cotton spandex or more structure by using fabric with a heavier weight.
Waffle knit
For this dress, I am using cotton waffle with about 75% stretch. If you haven’t work with waffle knit yet, here’s what you knit to know. It’s a textured fabric with waffle like indents that are created when the fabric is knitted or woven. These little indents trap the heat making it a perfect fabric to use for winter clothes!
Waffle knit is a more structure fabric so it really creates a different kind of look. It’s not the fabric to choose to achieve a great twirl, but it’s perfect to create a skirt with some volume!
Bamboo rib knit
For my last dress, I’ve decided to go with bamboo rib knit. Just like waffle knit, it has a great texture to it! The fabric I used is made of 95% bamboo and 5% spandex. It is extremely soft and has a good fluid drape. It is a great option for summer clothes because of it’s very light.
Trying out new fabric base can be such a great adventure! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
You can even play with all the available pattern options to create a new look each time!
