New Years Eve Party Dress

Hi!  It’s Amanda from LoveCraftSew on the blog today to bring you a little New Year’s Eve inspiration!

I love anything sparkly for NYE and gold sparkles paired with black are my very favorite color combo for this festive holiday!  I knew that I wanted to focus on tips for sewing with special occasion fabrics for this look as well.

For this party look I opted to use the Ella pattern as it is perfect for showcasing beautiful fabrics.  I used a black with gold glitter dot tulle from my stash and paired it with stretch velvet and a glitter lurex knit from Joann Fabric.

Here are a few tips for sewing with these special occasion fabrics:

  • It’s super important to be sure you are lining up your fabric on the selvage edges to get a straight cut for your pattern(this is especially important with tulle).  I like to use pattern weights on the corners and edges to ensure everything stays aligned properly before cutting.
  • Clips, clips and more clips!  When you are sewing with multiple layers be sure you are keeping all the layers together by clipping as you go. For my skirt I had 3 layers of tulle for my underskirt plus my lurex overskirt so taking the time to clip these 4 layers together was really important.
  • Once you have all your layers carefully pinned or clipped baste the layers together.  I know this takes extra time, but it is 100% worth the effort so that you catch all layers the first time.  I basted all my skirt layers together before attaching to my bodice.  I also basted my bodice main and lining together before attaching both the sleeves and skirt.
  • Hemming slinky fabrics such as velvet and the lurex can be really tricky and frustrating.  I love the look of a lettuce hem on fancy fabrics and it SO much easier than a traditional hem on these slippery fabrics.

To complete this party look I paired the dress with Sloane socks in stretch mesh (worn slouchy) adorned with tulle bows.  I also saved the circle tulle cut-outs (from my circle underskirts) and used them for a super cute (and totally easy) hairbow!

I hope you are inspired for NYE by this look, and I cannot wait to see yours in the Simple Life Fan Group when you are finished!
