Inspired Halloween: Barbie Costumes

Are you Kenough?! With these easy DIY Barbie Halloween costumes, you will be! Check out these simple tutorials on how to create your own Barbie look this spooky season.

Movie Barbie

First up, let’s take a look at the pink plaid beach outfit that Barbie wears in the new Barbie movie. Here’s the Inspo:

“Hey, Barbie!  Hi, it’s Amanda from LoveCraftSew on the blog today with a Barbie inspired look!  We all saw the Barbie craze sweep through the nation with the new movie this summer and the fashion looks were all SO fun.  I loved the look of the soft pink gingham and decided to mash together Barbie’s gingham swimsuit and gingham dress looks into one for the ultimate Barbie inspired dress.

For this dress you are going to pair the Tinsley skirt with the Bella bodice.  Once you have your patterns you will go ahead and cut the skirt for Tinsley and the bodice for Bella in your corresponding sizes with no changes to the pieces.  In order toreplicate the scalloped hem of the Barbie swim dress you will follow the directions in the Tinsely pattern to hem using the scallop template.  After you have sewn up both skirt and bodice you will gather and attach with no changes as well.  It is a SUPER simple mash-up of patterns!

The dress turned out exactly as I wanted but we all know that you need all the accessories to properly pull off a Barbie themed look.  There is a FREE bow tutorial on the Simple Life Blog (linked here) that perfectly replicates Barbie’s bow in the movie.  I sewed up the medium size bow and styled her hair in a half-up hairdo with the bow in the back.  I also wanted to combine the belt on Barbie’s dress with the waist bow on the swimsuit and settled on a sash tied into a bow to complete this look.  For this sash I cut my strip of fabric 3” wide by width of fabric.  This ended up being about 2x my daughter’s waist measurement so be sure to cut yours the correct length based on waist size.  You may need two pieces with a center seam to accomplish this.  I used the same method for the Bella straps to sew up my sash except that I also enclosed both ends by folding them in wrong sides together first.   To style the sash you will simply wrap it around her waist and tie it into a bow.  Once the hair bow and sash were complete, we had the perfect Barbie look!

I hope you are inspired for Halloween or just everyday dress up fun by this look, and I cannot wait to see yours in the Simple Life Fan Group when you are finished!”

Totally Hair Barbie

Next up, we have a Barbie costume inspired by “Totally Hair Barbie”. Here’s the Inspo:

“To start, I used the Simple Autumn Dress pattern with banded neckline, long sleeves, and vintage length. I modified the neckline slightly by widening at the shoulder to give more of a boatneck look. I then measured the neckline and cut my binding at 90% of the raw neckline measurement. As for the fabric, I used a shiny, colourful performance knit fabric from Joann Fabrics.“
